Root canal treatment often conjures up a frightening picture in your mind, of pain, sharp instruments and multiple visits to the dentist. If left unattended the decay in the tooth spreads to the inner layers of the tooth, affects the nerve and then breaks open the bony wall surrounding the tip of the root. Pus accumulates and the tooth becomes painful and tender to touch. In case of teeth that have suffered traumatic injury; the force of the impact itself sometimes damages the nerve of the involved tooth. As a result, the nerve gets infected resulting in severe pain. What exactly is Root Canal Treatment ?
Basically a tooth is made up of three layers of tissue. The 2 outer hard tissues are enamel and dentin. and the innermost soft tissue layer is called as the pulp.The pulp resides inside the root canals. This dental pulp contains of nerves , blood vessels , ground substance , interstitial fluid and other cellular components. The pulpal tissue is responsible for the pain and the sensitivity that we feel with the tooth. When this pulpal tissue is inflamed/diseased/infected due to the above mentioned reasons , root canal treatment is the treatment of choice.
Steps involved in root canal treatment:
- Local Anesthesia administration : The tooth to be treated is numbed so that no pain is felt during the treatment
- Access cavity preparation: This involves removal of carious/infected tooth portion and creating an access into the pulpal tissue
- Cleaning , disinfection and shaping : The infected pulpal tissue and debris is cleaned and the root canals are disinfected and shaped so as to receive a suitable filling.
- Obturation : This is the filling and sealing of the cleaned and shaped root canal space with bio-compatible material.
- Permanent filling : Once the root canal space is filled , a permanent filling is done in the access cavity.
- Crown Placement : After every root canal treatment , a crown is mandatory to give the tooth the required strength and avoid re-infection of the tooth

- We use state-of-the-art technology for crown preparation. We no longer take physical impressions , instead we scan the tooth/teeth digitally. Later the crowns are digitally designed and milled using CAD-CAM technology. This gives us an accuracy of 10microns and we deliver these perfect crowns within 24 hours.
