Understanding
Full Mouth Rehabilitation
Full mouth rehabilitation and reconstruction is the process of restoring the appearance and functionality of your mouth. If you need more than one restorative or cosmetic treatment to restore your smile, such as multiple dental implants or crowns, this is considered a full mouth rehabilitation.
Common reasons that a patient may need a full mouth reconstruction include:
- Multiple teeth that have been damaged due to tooth decay or oral trauma
- A number of Fractured or chipped teeth
- Teeth that have been worn down prematurely due to improper jaw alignment or tooth grinding (bruxism)
- Serious tooth stains and discoloration that cannot be treated with teeth whitening
- Multiple loose or missing teeth due to advanced stages of gum disease
- Numerous teeth with failing restorations such as fillings or crowns
Full mouth reconstructions usually include a number of different cosmetic and reconstructive dental procedures:
- Dental crowns – Dental crowns are tooth-shaped dental prostheses, which are designed to cover up damaged teeth and protect the remaining tooth structure. They are usually made out of porcelain, which means that they look just like a natural tooth.
- Dental bridges – Dental bridges include two dental crowns attached to healthy “abutment” teeth, and a false tooth (also known as a “pontic”) which is suspended between these teeth to fill the gap left behind by a missing tooth. Mostly, dental bridges are used to replace a single missing tooth. However, some types of dental bridges can be used to replace two or more adjacent missing teeth.
- Dental implants – Dental implants are small rod or screw-shaped pieces of titanium that are built to function as an artificial tooth root and replace missing teeth. The implant is placed where your missing tooth used to be, and as it heals, it bonds with your jaw and gum tissue. After the healing process, implants can be used to support a wide range of restorations, such as crowns, bridges, or even a full set of implant-supported dentures.
- Dentures – Partial dentures consist of one or multiple false teeth that attach to your remaining healthy teeth to restore your smile. Full dentures require the extraction of all of your remaining teeth, and sit directly on the gum line to restore the form and function of your smile.
Beyond these treatments, cosmetic treatments like teeth whitening, bonding, and veneers may also be used to improve the appearance of your smile.
A full mouth reconstruction allows your teeth to function properly again. Damaged, infected, loose, or missing teeth can make it difficult to perform even the most basic oral activities like eating, speaking, and smiling.
With a full mouth reconstruction, these issues will be eliminated and your oral health will be drastically improved. Your smile will also look much better, which will improve your confidence, emotional health, and your overall quality of life.
